VTTI Sharing the Road with Trucks Partnership

Drōv Technologies and the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute’s (VTTI) Sharing the Road with Trucks outreach program are proud to partner to promote safer roads across the country. Driving is the most dangerous task the majority of people encounter on a daily basis. There are currently almost 14 million trucks on our roadways hauling approximately 73% of all commodities in the country, which makes it a near certainty that the general motoring public will encounter these trucks while traveling our nation’s roads. It is imperative everyone understands the consequences of passenger vehicle/large truck interactions because it is a battle you will never win in the passenger vehicle.

The VTTI Sharing the Road with Trucks program travels the country teaching passenger vehicle drivers the physics of large trucks and the five key strategies for safely driving around these large trucks. Program outreach includes a unique hand’s-on experience where attendees sit in the driver’s seat of a tractor-trailer and see the truck driver’s perspective to gain firsthand knowledge about the blind spots around a truck and their overall lack of visibility. Over the past 6 years, the program has conducted more than 300 high school events reaching nearly 40,000 teen drivers along with 30 community events reaching nearly 10,000 people, while thousands of others are informed through the safety messaging on the Sharing the Road with Trucks trailers while traversing thousands of miles around the country. We also strive to continually improve the safety features in large trucks. Drōv smart trailer technology is installed on a Sharing the Road with Trucks trailer—this not only makes the program’s drivers and tractor-trailer safer, but it also helps raise commercial motor vehicle operator and fleet awareness of this available technology to help them do their part to keep our roads safe. The Drōv smart trailer sensors include:

·      Tire pressure monitoring with automatic inflation and deflation

·      Tire and brake temperature

·      Wheel end vibration

·      Light out detection

·      Axle weight sensors

·      GPS

·      Rear-facing and cargo box camera
